Hydraulic hoses are a critical component of any hydraulic system. As a means of delivering hydraulic fluid, the right hydraulic hose is critical to the safe and efficient use of a hydraulic system in any application.
To get the right hydraulic hose for the job, there are a number of hydraulic hose standards that you need to know. This concise article will explain everything you need to know.
Hydraulic hose standards include a range of different national and international standards covering hydraulic hose assembly, hydraulic hose crimping, hydraulic hose testing and hydraulic hose performance (including hydraulic hose size, strength and flexibility). These standards ensure that hose manufacturers meet safety and performance requirements.
There are several different national and international standards for hydraulic hoses with varying measurements, tolerances and parameters, depending on the geographical location.
For example, both the European Standard (EN) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) have developed their own hydraulic hose standards, but these standards differ from each other.
In North America, the typical hydraulic hose standard is set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This organization provides a series of hydraulic hose standards in the 100R series, defined under SAE Standard J517.
The 100R series of hydraulic hose standards differentiates hoses based on their construction and ideal conditions of use, including temperature, pressure, and fluid type.

Although these SAE hydraulic hose standards are widely accepted and used in the industry, SAE does not guarantee that products meet these standards. Be sure to purchase hydraulic hose from a reputable supplier to ensure that you are purchasing a high quality item that meets the hydraulic hose standards.
You'll also find that many manufacturers offer products that go beyond the SAE hydraulic hose standards, giving you more flexibility when using them in specific applications. Some hoses have higher temperature or pressure ratings, or smaller bend radii.
